Roof Tree Damage Repair in Ogden

Have Roof Damage From Trees?

Here’s What Ogden & Northern Utah Homeowners Need to Know

When a storm hits Ogden or the trees in your backyard start leaning a little too close for comfort, your roof could be taking the brunt of it—and you might not even realize it. Living in Northern Utah means dealing with all four seasons, which also means your roof deals with it too. And while it’s built to handle a lot, it’s not built to fight off nature’s heavyweight champion: trees.

Let’s walk through how to spot tree-related roof damage, what to do if you see it, and how to prevent it from happening again. Whether it’s a few cracked shingles or a full-on tree limb crash landing, this is what every Northern Utah homeowner should know.

How Tree Damage Happens in the First Place

It’s easy to overlook the potential danger of the trees around your house—until you hear that sudden crack during a windstorm. Even without a major storm, overhanging limbs, falling debris, and critters jumping from branches can slowly wear your roof down. The damage isn’t always obvious at first, but it adds up over time.

Common ways trees damage roofs in Ogden and surrounding areas:

  • Branches scraping and lifting shingles
  • Heavy limbs falling during storms or snow buildup
  • Leaves and pine needles clogging gutters
  • Shade causing moss or moisture buildup
  • Squirrels and raccoons hopping from tree to roof

Spotting Roof Damage Caused by Trees

Think of your roof as a silent warrior—it won’t complain until it’s in real trouble. But there are signs if you know where to look.

  1. Cracked, Curled, or Missing Shingles: Branches constantly brushing against your roof can wear away the granules on shingles, causing them to crack, curl, or break. And if something heavier falls—like a limb—you might notice a whole section of shingles missing. Windstorms that whip branches around can do the same. Take a walk around your property. If you spot shingle pieces in your yard or notice bald spots on your roof, that’s your signal.
  2. Moss, Mold, or Algae Patches: Too much shade from a nearby tree can trap moisture on your roof. When parts of your roof never dry out, mold and moss start to take over. These growths break down roofing materials over time and could signal more serious moisture problems underneath. If you’re seeing green fuzz or dark streaks on your shingles, it’s time to call someone before it gets worse.
  3. Piles of Leaves, Needles, and Twigs: It’s not just unsightly—organic debris left to pile up can trap moisture, clog gutters, and lead to rot. During the fall in Northern Utah, this kind of buildup is super common. But if you’re seeing it year-round, that’s a red flag. It might be a sign your roof isn’t draining properly, or that overhanging branches are dumping too much onto your home.
  4. Unusual Animal Activity: Squirrels, raccoons, and birds love using trees as springboards to your roof. Once up there, they can do a surprising amount of damage: tearing off shingles, nesting in vents, or even trying to claw into your attic. If you hear scurrying or see animals hanging around your roofline, don’t ignore it. Related: What should you expect when you get a roofing estimate?
  5. Sunlight Blockage: If your roof never seems to dry out after rain or snow, that’s not just bad luck—it’s poor sun exposure. Trees that block too much sunlight can turn your roof into a damp, mold-friendly zone. Northern Utah already gets its fair share of snow, so the less drying time your roof has, the more long-term issues you’re inviting. Related: Help! My roof is getting old!

What Can You Do to Prevent Roof Damaage From Trees?

Here’s the good news: most tree-related roof damage is avoidable with a little effort. These simple steps go a long way in protecting your home:

Trim Back Overhanging Branches

Branches that hang over your roof should be cut back well before they get a chance to fall or scrape against your shingles. It’s best to call a certified arborist or tree professional to handle this safely—especially if the limbs are large or near power lines.

Clean Your Roof and Gutters Regularly

Fallen leaves, pine needles, and twigs can clog gutters and downspouts, leading to standing water on your roof. That moisture can find its way into the smallest cracks and turn into a leak.

Make sure your gutters stay clean and that water can flow freely away from your roof. If you don’t feel safe climbing a ladder, don’t worry—that’s a job The Roofing Experience can help guide you through or refer a reliable gutter service for.

Remove Problem Trees

It’s a tough call, but sometimes a tree just isn’t safe to keep around. If it’s leaning toward your home, has shallow roots, or shows signs of disease, you’re better off having it removed. In Northern Utah, windstorms and snow buildup make unstable trees a serious threat.

Talk with a professional before cutting anything down—but don’t wait until a storm makes that decision for you.

Deter Animal Access

Trim back branches that animals use to leap onto your roof, and consider sealing entry points like vents or roofline gaps. The less appealing your roof is to critters, the fewer surprises you’ll find up there.

What to Do If You Already Have Damage

If you suspect tree-related damage, don’t panic—but don’t ignore it either. Even small issues can turn into major headaches if left too long.

Here’s what to do:

  1. Visually Inspect From the Ground
Walk around your home and use binoculars if needed. Look for missing shingles, sagging areas, or signs of mold and moss.
  2. Check Inside Your Attic
After a heavy storm, take a look at your attic for water spots, wet insulation, or signs of animals. Even a small leak can cause major long-term damage if left untreated.
  3. Call The Roofing Experience for a Free Inspection
That’s where we come in. At The Roofing Experience, we know what to look for and how to stop minor issues from becoming expensive repairs. The Roofing experiance is a great company to work with, Edgar will 100% do what ever it takes to make sure youre Roofing experiance a good one. His crews are true craftsman and respectful of youre home. The reason I chose the Roofing Experiance is that I was able to see the work he did on a neighboring property , the roof replacement he did looked great , and the way his crew conducted themselves was admirable . There were a few hiccups due to Utahs unpredictable weather, but it did not take away from the end result which was perfection. It was truly a pleasure entrusting Edgar with my roof.

Really appreciate the prompt and detailed customer service. They installed our roof before we bought the house and when we had issues with a cap leaking they came to the rescue. It was outside of their warranty but came out and replaced it for my satisfaction.

My husband and I bought a house that unfortunately had a damaged, leaking roof with poorly installed gutters, which led to extensive mold damage. Our mold remediation company recommended Edgar and The Roofing Experience for the reroof. Since the mold company deals with the consequences of poorly installed roofs every day, we took that recommendation very seriously. Our roof was a complicated replacement. It still had the original cedar shakes beneath two layers of asphalt shingles, all over skip sheathing with no solid decking, so everything had to be torn off and rebuilt. We also had two crumbling chimneys that needed to be removed. We got several quotes, and Edgar’s was significantly less expensive than the other top-quality bids, with an excellent warranty, and confidence that he and his crew knew what they were doing. He took the time to listen to all of our concerns, walked us through the options, and explained the reasoning behind each recommendation without ever making us feel pressured. One thing that really stood out was that Edgar's crew are all W-2 employees rather than whichever subcontractors happen to be available that week. That gave us a lot of confidence that the quality of the installation would be consistent, and the crew absolutely lived up to that expectation. They were professional, courteous, and handled the unexpected discovery of a family of SIX RACCOONS living in one of the chimneys with good judgment and a positive attitude. Our neighbors, who are not easily impressed, even commented on how professional the crew was. They took care to protect the property, did a thorough nail sweep that even included our neighbors' yard, and left the job site clean every day. Edgar also went above and beyond in small ways that made a big difference. He left the dumpster for an extra weekend so we could dispose of insulation my husband was removing from the attic, which saved us a tremendous amount of hassle. He also left us with gutter color samples so we could take our time choosing a color that we liked because he understood this was a long-term investment. I highly recommend Edgar and The Roofing Experience. They delivered excellent workmanship, honest communication, fair pricing, and outstanding customer service from start to finish. We now have peace of mind knowing that our roof was done right and will last for decades.

Edgar and his team did such an amazing job on my house roof + detached unit roof as well! He’s super knowledgeable and loves to educate you on what you’re getting. Him and his team were working on our house within 2 weeks of signing our contract, were super clean and professional, and done within 2 days! My upstairs is already significantly cooler with the upgraded roof system. Super happy with the outcome! It looks amazing

  • How can I tell if a tree has damaged my roof in Ogden or Northern Utah?

Roof damage from trees isn’t always obvious, but watch for signs like cracked or missing shingles, piles of leaves or branches, moss or mold growth, and increased animal activity on your roof. If you’re in Ogden or anywhere in Northern Utah, inspect your roof after storms and look for visible wear, especially near overhanging branches.
  • What are the most common ways trees damage roofs in Northern Utah?

In Ogden and the surrounding areas, trees most commonly damage roofs through falling limbs during storms, branches scraping and loosening shingles, debris clogging gutters, and shade that traps moisture—leading to mold or moss. Even animals like squirrels can cause damage by jumping from trees to your roof.
  • Can clogged gutters from tree debris really cause roof problems in Ogden?

Yes—clogged gutters from leaves and pine needles are a major cause of roof damage in Ogden and Northern Utah. Blocked drainage leads to standing water, which can soak into your roof’s structure, cause leaks, and promote rot, especially during fall and spring storm seasons.
  • Should I remove trees that are close to my house in Northern Utah?

If a tree is leaning toward your home, has weak or shallow roots, or is diseased, it may pose a serious risk to your roof—especially during Northern Utah’s heavy snow or windstorms. Have a professional arborist assess whether it should be trimmed or removed to prevent costly roof damage.
  • Start by inspecting your roof from the ground or checking your attic for leaks, water stains, or animal activity. Then call a local expert like The Roofing Experience in Ogden for a free inspection. Early detection and repair can save you thousands by stopping minor damage from turning into a major issue.
